Vegetarian Grocery List Checkoff

Food & Health, Food & Health

I constantly get questions like “What foods do you buy for a vegetarian family? Where do you grocery shop? How much waste do you have after the week? So I thought I’d dedicate this post to answer those questions and share some of my fav items to buy weekly. First off, where do I go?

My top stores include:

  • H Mart (or your local Asian market)
  • Aldi
  • Trader Joes
  • Sprouts (similar to Whole Foods)
  • Local Internationals markets (Spanish, Indian or Middle Eastern)

I always start with the produce section. This is where I buy the majority of my items. I would recommend you alternate items weekly so you don’t get tired of the same things and meals. This is a major key in succeeding with this lifestyle. It’s easy to make the same easy recipes over and over until you see someone eating fried chicken and you question your whole life (been there) so keep it exciting, switch it up and you wont feel like your missing out on anything.

Vegetables:

  • Lettuce ( romaine, spinach, spring mix, kale, etc.) – I alternate these a lot.
  • Cabbage (green, red)
  • Carrots (shredded are my fav, or baby ones for dipping)
  • Mushrooms (portabella and shiitake)
  • Broccoli
  • Corn
  • Cauliflower
  • Bean Sprouts
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Cilantro / Parsley / Thai Basil
  • Onions / Green Onions
  • Celery / Leeks
  • Asparagus
  • Bok Choy
  • Egg Plants
  • Plantain
  • Yuca /  other roots
  • Potato / Sweet Potato
  • Zucchini / Squash
  • Cucumbers
  • Multi- Colored Peppers
  • Jalapeños / Poblanos

I understand these are seasonal so I recommend getting what’s in season that way you get the freshest fruits.

Fruits:

  • Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries
  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Apples (Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith are my faves)
  • Citrus (lemons, limes, oranges, blood oranges, bitter oranges, clementine, tangerines, tangelos, and pomelos)
  • Coconut
  • Pomegranate
  • Melons (Water, Cantaloupe, Honeydew)
  • Pineapples
  • Papaya (great for smoothies)
  • Mangos
  • Guava
  • Kiwis
  • Asian Fruits: These are my absolute favorite types, they are so sweet and delicious. They are usually more expensive and harder to find, but totally worth it.

    • Jackfruit – tastes like candy raw or is great for meat substitutes
    • Durian
    • Dragon Fruit – White Flesh, Pink Flesh and Yellow Skin (give them all a try)
    • Lychee / Rambutan / Longan
    • Passionfruit – bursts of sweet goodness
    • Mangosteen (expensive and rare  but so good)
    • Star Fruit
    • Kumquat
    • Tamarind (which is actually very popular in Hispanic Countries as well)

Now to address how much waste we have, it really depends on the week. If we stuck to our goal that week and didn’t eat out, then we generally have minimal waste. Some weeks we just like everyone, either get lazy and don’t want to cook (i.e.; cereal for dinner )or end up eating out. Those weeks we tend to have more waste, but with either week I don’t think the waste is enough to break the bank. I honestly think having the good food in your house makes you want to do good. Just knowing you have the options available at home, makes it easy to want to cook them and lets be honest save some money.

Well that is all y’all! I hope you found this post helpful and I that you saved my list for the next time you go shopping. Let me know if you’ve tried any of items, which ones are your favorites, or if I missed anything you like. I love trying new things and will always give my feedback. Thanks for reading, until next time!

    Goodbye 2018, Hello 2019!

    About Me

Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s that time again. I always look forward to the Holidays and New Years, but I always get a little sad when it’s over. 2018 was a great year for me, I finally took a leap and decided to start this blog, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for years now. For 2019, I would like to plan out and set my goals, and see them in writing that way I’m held responsible for them. I would also like to read this at the end of this year and see what goals I accomplished.

As the new year starts, I would like to focus mainly on my mental and physical growth. Get back to a cleaner diet and workout a couple times a week. I want to dedicate more time to my blog and write a minimum of one post a week as well as get some vlogs out. My goal is to grow my page and blog, while making sure I keep my focus on my love for fashion, beauty and home decor.

Traveling more is always a goal of mine, I already have a couple trips planned and I can’t wait to plan some more. I cannot wait to see what 2019 has in store for me, but I also love to look back and see my past work and learn and grow from it.

So, here’s a look at my last year in pics…. ( no particular order, just some highlights)

Thank you for the support I received in my first months as a blogger and I hope you guys stick around to see my posts this year.

    Local Guide: New York

    Local Guides + Travel

One NY trip post is never enough to cover the city, so you can call this NY post part II. After visiting NYC, I had a chance to spend some days north of the city, and I LOVED it. Although NYC, will always be my favorite city, I must say staying in a slower, less busy parts f NY was also nice. Growing up in the city, I never realized how big New York is. I was so consumed by the city, I never saw the charm and beauty other cities in New York had to offer.

Some other places I visited were:

    • Yonkers
    • White Plains
    • Mount Vernon
    • New Rochelle
    • Mamaroneck
    • Nyack
    • Nanuet
    • Stony Point

Most of my time was spent in Stony Point, NY. Small but beautiful Historic Town. While I was there I headed over to Bear Mountain State Park. Which is linked here. I had a great time sight seeing and driving the park.

I of course did some shopping, some places I shopped were The Palisades Mall in Nyack. While there I played in Dave and Busters, ate Nathan’s hotdogs (yumm) and shopped Zara, Uniqlo, H&M and F21. They also have a lot of local / small owned business which are great to get unique pieces. I also visited the Nanuet Shops, an outdoor mall with so much to offer. We stopped in to The Westchester Mall , a beautiful, upscale mall.

Some food spots we hit while there

    • Pops Espresso , in New Rochelle
    • Mount Ivy in Pomona
    • Art Cafe of Nyack
    • We had pizza in two different places in Yonkers, don’t know the name but you can’t really go wrong with Pizza anywhere in NY.

The rest of my time was spent catching up with family. Sometimes staying home with family and spending quality time is all you need.

    The Weekender… Charlotte Edition

    Local Guides + Travel

Ahhh the Weekend, my absolute two favorite days of the week. Not only are these my days off, but this is when I have a chance to get dressed up, do a full face of makeup, and go check out all those places I saved on yelp. This weekend I headed out to Charlotte, NC. I love weekend get-a-ways, it’s just enough time to clear your head and change things up a bit. I’m clearly a sucker for a cute coffee shop and anything with a photo op! I like to think of myself as the ‘Weekend Blogger’.

Here’s a recap of my weekend through pics:

We spent our Sunday in Noda, Charlotte’s historic Arts District. It’s know for it’s art (hence the name) with murals covering majority of the streets and buildings. It’s great for brunch, drinks, local shops and even has street vendors. What’s not to love about that!?

We started our Sunday with coffee at The Smelly Cat Coffeehouse a Friends (the tv show) themed coffeeshop.

We then headed to Haberdish. A Southern kitchen restaurant know for their cocktails and killer brunch options.

    The following are pics that I have taken in Noda. I call these;

Hope you all enjoyed the first of many The Weekender Edition. As always, comments, messages and feedback are welcomed here or on my IG. Thanks for visiting !

Top 10 Insta-worthy spots in Raleigh, NC

    Local Guides + Travel

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Raleigh’s population to be 464,758 as of July 1, 2017. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, so naturally things are changing. I remember moving here in 2005 and literally having the mall as one of my only options to shop, eat and hang out. Coming from NYC (greatest city in the world) I was blown away by the lack of shopping, entertainment, and exploring there was to do. It took me years to get used to the slow pace and the southern hospitality (You mean people actually hold doors open for you and say Good Morning, and yes they are being serious). Slowly but surely I got used to the ‘Sunday drivers’ and saying hello to strangers. The south has a way of making you enjoy life more, it’s ok to walk slowly and wander. Needless to say 13 years later and I’m in love with my city. With so many new places constantly coming to Raleigh I love checking them out and sharing with you guys! Here’s a list of my top 10 (I snuck in a couple more in.. shh).

The list is in no particular order ( I would never be able to choose)

    • LaFayette Village – French Inspired Village.. I mean do I need to say more? Located in North Raleigh and filled with restaurants, and retail while being able to capture so many perfect shots this is easily one of my favorites to go visit. They also hold fun events year long. I get to sneak in another spot here too because my fav coffee shop is in the village. Jubala has all the Instagram worthy shots and even better coffee and food.

    • Brewery Bhavana – This one is in downtown Raleigh and is all that and Dim Sum (sorry I had to). First off plan your visit ahead of time and make a reservation. Second, bring your camera or phone. The restaurant is all about ambiance and you can feel it as soon as you walk in. They have a book and floral shop while you wait to be seated. When you’re ready to eat they are known for their beers (hence the name) and Dim Sum. They also have a lot of great vegetarian options. I’m going to include their sister spot as well. Make sure next time your out that way to try Bida Manda .

    • Sola Coffee Cafe – Located in North Raleigh, this is definitely one of Raleigh’s most instagrammed spot. They have coffee (of course) food, apparel and pop up markets. What else could you ask for? Murals, and cute vintage frames for your IG.. oh yea they have that too. They have the infamous I Believe in Raleigh mural.

    • Morgan Street Food Hall – Located in the Ware House District in Downtown Raleigh, this is easily Raleigh natives newest hot spot. Countless food options, bars, desserts, and retail kiosks. You can go Vietnamese or Mediterranean for dinner, have beer or wine, and finish with ice cream or boba tea. Perfect if you don’t know what you want to eat or can’t choose between restaurants. They have murals, and an outside perfect for those IG shots.

    • North Hills – Located in Mid-town Raleigh, actually North Hills is Mid-town. Growth in NH has been crazy recently, every time I visit there’s something new. Retail, Restaurants, Residences, Offices, Movie theater and the Renaissance Hotel to name a few. You can spend a whole day strolling the neighborhood and not even realize it’s been hours. I’m going to include Happy + Hale within here as well. Perfect spot if your trying to keep it healthy or if you like different colored lattes ie (pink, green and yellow) perfect for pics .

    • The Raleigh Times – Located in Downtown Raleigh, TRT is a stable in downtown. Specializing in beers and they also have a good food menu. The building has been around a long time and you can see that which gives it it’s vintage vibe and makes it a great spot to shoot in. The creaking floor and brick walls adds character. They also have a great view of DT off the third floor outside deck.

    • Boylan Bridge Brewpub – Located in Historic Boylan Heights, DT Raleigh. First off the entire neighborhood has the most gorgeous homes and old buildings. This pub is way underrated in my opinion. They have the best view of DT Raleigh, and the skyline. The Union Square Station is also in sight so while your enjoying the food and drinks, you can enjoy the great view of the city and see the trains come and go.

    • City Market – Located in DT Raleigh, The Historic City Market is a must-see. The uneven cobble stone streets, the brick buildings and ancient huge trees makes this a great place to see / post. They offer retail, restaurants and streets markets. They also have Halloween and Holiday markets.

    • The Dillon Raleigh – Located in Ware House District in DT. This is a mixed development building housing, office spaces, apts, restaurants and retail. The first major retail in DT to be exact; Urban Outfitters . The rooftop area has an unbelievable view of DT. They are hosting events on the roof top as well. They house the new IG fav coffee shop Heirloom Brewshop serving ambiance, food, tea, coffee and Sake. Hmm.

    • N.C. State Fair – Located in the NC State Fairgrounds, (so major it’s named after itself ). I was undecided if I wanted to add this to my list seeing they are only in town for 10 days a year. But.. You can’t live in NC and not post a pic at the fair every year. It’s mandatory.. isn’t it? Yes. Known for its crazy food choices and rides this is a must see and do and shoot and post.

I know I said 10 and we’re at like 15, but I have a couple more places to gram that needed a spot on this post.

I hope you guy stuck through to see this and I hope you enjoyed the post. Next time you need an idea on where to go or what to do I hope this list helps you out. As always any comments or questions are welcomed on here or my IG. Thanks so much!
